Bio

Barbara Goldberg, raised in Forest Hills, New York, graduated phi beta kappa from Mount Holyoke College, has an MEd from Columbia University and an MFA from American University. She is the author of four prizewinning books of poetry, most recently, the 2008 Felix Pollak Prize for The Royal Baker’s Daughter (University of Wisconsin Press). She also co-edited and co-translated two anthologies of Israeli Poetry with Moshe Dor: After the First Rain: Israeli Poems on War and Peace (University of Syracuse Press) and The Stones Remember, recipient of the Witter Bynner Foundation Award (The Word Works).  In addition, she and Dor translated The Fire Stays in Red: Poems of Ronny Someck (University of Wisconsin Press). Among Goldberg’s honors are two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, numerous grants from the Maryland State Arts Council, the Armand G. Erpf Award from the Translation Center, Columbia University, as well as national awards in fiction, feature writing and speechwriting. She appears in the 2010 Best American Poetry.  Her poems also appear in the Gettysburg Review, Poetry and The Paris Review.  She has served as an executive editor of Poet Lore magazine and as Poet-in-Residence in Howard County, Maryland. A former senior speechwriter at AARP, she has taught speechwriting, poetry, and translation at Georgetown University, the Writer’s Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and in the MFA program at American University. Goldberg serves on the Poetry Board of the Folger Shakespeare Library and lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
